Biography

 

Dr. Socorro García-Alvarado is an Assistant Professor at Texas A&M University, San Antonio.  She teaches undergraduate and graduate courses on educational assessment, literacy and understanding diverse families and young children.  Dr. García-Alvarado has served the field of education for over 20 years as an elementary monolingual and bilingual teacher, and administrator. Dr. García-Alvarado holds a Master’s degree in Educational Leadership with a principal certification from the University of Texas of the Permian Basin.  A Ph.D. in Interdisciplinary Learning and Teaching with an Early childhood and Elementary cognate from the University of Texas at San Antonio.   Garcia-Alvarado’s research interests involve young children’s cultural wealth, family and community engagement, and the intersections of language and social justice through culturally relevant practices.  Dr. García-Alvarado is also the Co-PI on a federal grant and oversees the parental practices and family engagement on the project.
