Who You Are

You will provide support for tasks and contribute to initiatives that help fulfil AGU's mission and strategic goals while gaining hands-on experience in editorial operations and publications promotion. You will be a proactive person who is organized and has strong time management skills.

This internship will be split between two core functions of the Publications department. In the Publications Operations team, you will support peer review operations in AGU’s journals, processing submissions and working directly with stakeholders (authors, editors, reviewers, and other partners) to address submission and production related issues. You will support various initiatives with the Editor Relations team that supports our 1000+ editors and associate editors.

What You Will Do

Journal operations (60%)

• Assist with tasks in GEMS (AGU journals’ submission and peer review platform) for assigned journals to ensure that submitted manuscripts are processed in accordance with journal expectations in terms of timeliness, ethical standards, and quality while maintaining strong, positive relationships with the editors, authors, and reviewers.
• Provide support to editors, authors, and reviewers. This includes GEMS assistance, advice on procedures and policy, troubleshooting production and publication related issues, assisting with coordination of editorial board calls, note-taking during board calls, etc.
• Provide support during peak volume times, potentially assisting other journals during these times.
• Contribute to small projects of professional interest


Editor relations and support (40%)

• Support efforts to audit and update editorial board listings (mastheads) on journal websites
• Provide admin support and coordination for our Editor-in-Chief search initiatives, including scheduling candidate interviews
• Help research and create proposals and carbon footprint estimates for various cities in consideration for our annual Editor-in-Chief retreat


What You Will Bring

• A Bachelor's degree, or a current student of a program, in the geosciences, environmental sciences, or a related discipline, or in publishing, English, or a related discipline.
• Ability to manage multiple complex projects at the same time.
• Ability to work in a collaborative environment.

• Demonstrated attention to detail.
• Professional customer service attitude including responding to inquiries in a timely manner
• and interpersonal skills.
• Ability to exercise discretion in confidential matters.

• Full Time/ Hourly, 3-month internship, This remote role is open to candidates based in most U.S. states (excluding WA, OR, and CA at this time).
• Pay is $17.95 per hour.
