Internship Description

Job Summary

Cadence is seeking summer interns that have a passion for the construction industry, who have a passion for learning and are looking to start building their career with like-minded professionals.

The Summer Internship Program supports the project team delivering mission-critical data center projects. This role provides hands-on exposure to field operations, project controls, and construction administration. The intern will assist with coordination of subcontractors, documentation, safety, quality, and schedule tracking while learning how a general contractor executes complex, fast-paced data center work.

The following are the key areas of focus for our summer internships. We look to balance learning opportunities and at the same time give meaningful and thoughtful work that challenges our teammates. This isn’t a summer of making coffee or taking trips to the sandwich shop, this is a real-life opportunity to be a part of fast past projects and tackle tasks that matter.

Field & Coordination Support

• Assist superintendents and field engineers with daily coordination of subcontractors and work areas.
• Participate in daily huddles, weekly coordination meetings, and plan-of-day/plan-of-week activities.
• Help track deliveries, staging, laydown, and installation progress for key scopes (structural, architectural, MEP, electrical). Learn the value of project and site logistics planning.
• Observe and support commissioning readiness activities (checklists, turnover packages, pre-functional planning).

Project Controls & Documentation

• Support the team with document control: drawings, RFIs, submittals, meeting minutes, and change documentation.
• Assist in maintaining project logs (RFI, submittal, issue tracking, daily reports) in the project management system (e.g., Procore or similar).
• Help update look-ahead schedules and track constraints/roadblocks.
• Support quantity tracking and basic takeoffs for self-perform or subcontracted work to aid in labor and schedule forecasts.

Safety & Quality

• Attend safety orientations and reinforce site safety requirements (PPE, housekeeping, JHAs, access control).
• Assist with quality observations, punch lists, and deficiency tracking.
• Participate in site walks with project leadership to verify installation readiness and workmanship.

Client & Team Exposure

• Shadow PMs, PEs, and supers to learn procurement, buyout, subcontract management, and cost tracking.
• Assist in preparing weekly progress updates (photos, narrative, risks/mitigations).
• Engage with design and trade partners to learn coordination workflows (shop drawing review, clash coordination support).

Learning Objectives

• Understanding how data centers are designed and built (mission critical sequencing, MEP/electrical intensity, commissioning-driven turnover).
• Exposure to GC processes: procurement, schedule control, field coordination, QA/QC, commissioning and closeout.
• Experience with construction management software and project documentation standards.

Required Qualifications

• Current enrollment in Construction Management, Civil Engineering, Mechanical/Electrical Engineering, Architecture, or related program (preferred: current sophomore/junior).
• Strong communication skills and willingness to learn in a field environment.
• Basic proficiency with Microsoft Office (Excel, Word, Outlook).
• Ability to work on an active construction site (walking, standing, stairs, varying weather/site conditions).

Preferred Qualifications

• Prior internship, co-op, or field experience in construction is preferred, but not required.
• Familiarity with Procore, Bluebeam, Autodesk Build/BIM 360, Primavera P6, or MS Project.
• Interest in mission-critical construction, commissioning, and complex MEP/electrical systems.

Core Competencies

• Safety-first mindset
• Attention to detail and follow-through
• Strong time management
• Team-oriented attitude
• Ambitious self-starter
• Curiosity and problem-solving, love to ask questions and challenge status quo

Compensation / Benefits

• Paid internship with company provided housing/per diem support if the assignment requires travel, overnight accommodations or extended work at a remote location.
