Role Description - Brooklyn Youth Initiative (BYI)


Gain forensic clinical experience under the supervision of an LMHC-D, supporting court-involved youth ages 14–24 through Kings County Youth Part (YP1), Family/Juvenile settings, and detention facilities.


Current students: Master’s-level students in Mental Health Counseling or Forensic Mental Health Counseling needing field placement hours to graduate. Contract position, approximately August 2026 – May 2027.


Also open to: Limited Permit holders, or those seeking issuance of their MHC-LP, ready to begin the required 3,000+ hours toward full licensure.


Schedule is individualized; availability for court appearances required.

The Court-Involved Youth MHC Extern is an internship role that supports court-involved young people participating in mental health counseling and related services. This hybrid position is based in Brooklyn, NY, with some flexibility for work-from-home tasks such as documentation, research, and virtual meetings. Day-to-day responsibilities may include assisting with intake procedures, observing counseling sessions (as appropriate), supporting case management activities, and helping coordinate appointments or referrals. The extern may contribute to program documentation, data entry, and preparation of educational and therapeutic materials, under supervision from professional staff. The role involves collaborating with multidisciplinary team members, attending supervision and training, and maintaining confidentiality and professional boundaries at all times.


Qualifications

• Interest in mental health counseling, social work, psychology, criminal justice, or a related human services field, with coursework or training that supports work with youth.
• Strong interpersonal and communication skills, including the ability to build rapport, listen actively, and engage respectfully with court-involved youth and their families.
• Organizational and administrative abilities, such as accurate documentation, time management, attention to detail, and comfort with basic computer and data entry tasks.
• Capacity to work effectively in a hybrid environment, including reliability in Brooklyn-based in-person activities and appropriate self-management when working remotely.
• Demonstrated commitment to equity, inclusion, and nonjudgmental support for diverse communities, including sensitivity to trauma, cultural differences, and systemic barriers.
• Ability to follow supervision, adhere to program policies, maintain confidentiality, and uphold ethical and professional standards.
• Availability for a set internship schedule and willingness to learn from feedback, training, and reflective practice.
