Mechanical Engineering Intern – Role Description
This is a remote internship role for a Mechanical Engineering Intern, based in the United States. The position is ideal for a highly motivated engineering student who is interested in applying mechanical design, analysis, and problem-solving skills to the development of next-generation nuclear energy systems.
The Mechanical Engineering Intern will support engineering efforts across the nuclear and non-nuclear portions of Hadron Energy's micro modular reactor design and Balance of Plant. The role will primarily focus on mechanical design and drafting support, with additional opportunities to contribute to component design assessments, engineering calculations, technical documentation, and design optimization.
You will work closely with experienced mechanical, nuclear, structural, systems, and manufacturing engineers to translate engineering requirements into detailed designs and help advance reactor components from conceptual development toward manufacturing and commercial deployment.
Responsibilities
• Support mechanical design and drafting of reactor components, assemblies, systems, and Balance of Plant equipment
• Develop and update 3D CAD models, engineering drawings, assemblies, and design documentation
• Assist engineers with component design assessments, trade studies, and design optimization activities
• Support development of dimensions, tolerances, material specifications, and component interface requirements
• Assist with basic mechanical engineering calculations involving loads, stresses, heat transfer, fluid systems, or component performance
• Work with senior engineers to incorporate design changes and engineering feedback into CAD models and drawings
• Support design-for-manufacturing and assembly (DFMA) activities to improve manufacturability, simplicity, and cost
• Assist with preparation and maintenance of bills of materials (BOMs), component specifications, and technical documentation
• Support engineering reviews, design verification activities, and resolution of technical action items
• Research components, materials, manufacturing processes, and applicable engineering standards
• Coordinate with structural analysis, materials, manufacturing, procurement, and systems engineering teams as required
• Assist with prototype development, testing, vendor interactions, and component qualification activities
• Maintain organized engineering files and documentation in accordance with Hadron's engineering and quality processes
• Present technical work and project progress to engineering team members and leadership
Qualifications & Skillsets
• Currently pursuing a Bachelor's or Master's degree in Mechanical Engineering or a closely related engineering discipline
• Must be actively enrolled in an accredited college or university for the duration of the internship
• Prior engineering internship, research, design team, laboratory, or significant technical project experience preferred
• Experience with 3D CAD and mechanical drafting, preferably using SolidWorks, Creo, CATIA, Siemens NX, Inventor, or equivalent software
• Understanding of fundamental mechanical engineering principles including mechanics, materials, thermodynamics, fluid mechanics, and heat transfer
• Familiarity with engineering drawings, GD&T, tolerancing, and mechanical component design is preferred
• Exposure to finite element analysis (FEA), computational tools, or engineering simulation is a plus
• Familiarity with machining, welding, fabrication, additive manufacturing, or other manufacturing processes is beneficial
• Experience with MATLAB, Python, Excel, or other engineering analysis tools is a plus
• Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with high attention to detail
• Ability to communicate technical information clearly and collaborate effectively within multidisciplinary engineering teams
• Self-motivated, intellectually curious, and comfortable taking ownership of technical assignments
• Interest in nuclear energy, advanced manufacturing, power generation, or complex mechanical systems is highly desirable
• Passion for engineering innovation and contributing to the development of safe, scalable clean energy technology
