The NC Department of Adult Correction is one of the largest state agencies with more than 14,000 employees. It is responsible for safeguarding and preserving lives and property through prevention, protection, and preparation as well as the care, custody, and supervision of all adults sentenced for violating North Carolina laws. This department includes state prisons with custody, healthcare, and facility operations staff as well as probation/parole officers who supervised sentenced people in the community. Other divisions include Administration, Health Services, Rehabilitation & Reentry, Special Operations and the Post-Release Supervision & Parole Commission. We have a mission that matters!


Description of Work


The NC Department of Adult Correction (NCDAC) Summer Internship Program offers a paid, 9–10-week experience designed to provide students with meaningful, hands-on exposure to public service and state government operations. Interns will contribute to mission-critical projects across multiple divisions, gaining practical skills in areas such as human resources, finance, purchasing, IT, communications, education services, and compliance. 


This program is ideal for students pursuing degrees in criminal justice, public administration, business, accounting, healthcare, IT, engineering, social work, and related fields.

Students should coordinate with their institution if seeking academic credit as our agency will be paying the student

Veterans’ and National Guard Preference 


Applicants seeking Veteran's Preference must attach a DD-214 Member-4 Form (Certificate of Release or Discharge from Active Duty) to their applications. 


Applicants seeking National Guard Preference must attach an NGB 23A (RPAS), along with the state application, if they are a current member of the NC National Guard in good standing. 


Applicants who are former members of either the NC Army National Guard or the NC Air National Guard, with honorable discharge and six years of creditable service, must attach a copy of the DD 256 or NGB 22, along with the state application.

Minimum Education and Experience


Some state job postings say you can qualify by an “equivalent combination of education and experience.” If that language appears below, then you may qualify through EITHER years of education OR years of directly related experience, OR a combination of both. Must be a permanent North Carolina resident attending an accredited college, university, law school, community college, or technical institute in North Carolina (or a NC resident attending an equivalent institution out of state).


Community college students must have completed their first year completed before beginning the internship.


Applicants must be continuing their education in the fall following their participation in the program.


To qualify for a law internship, applicants must have completed at least one year of law school before the beginning of the internship, unless other majors are listed.


Students having previously held paid internships with this program are not eligible to apply- subject to exception approval.


Must be a junior or senior (associate’s, bachelor’s, or master’s level) with a minimum 2.0 GPA.


Must be at least 18 years old by January 1, 2026


Must be legally authorized to work in the United States and provide proof of identity and work authorization within three business days of employment.
