As a Research Geophysics Intern, you will collaborate with our Research & Technology Special Projects team at our Houston Headquarters location to tackle complex, real-world challenges in subsurface and geoscience data. Working closely with the Senior Principal Geophysicist and team members, you will contribute to the advancement of seismic imaging and inversion through early-stage research and proof-of-concept development, while exploring innovative solutions using cutting-edge technologies such as machine learning and AI.
Responsibilities
• Contribute to early-stage research and proof-of-concept development of new solutions for seismic imaging and inversion.
• Explore and validate innovative concepts by leveraging cutting-edge technologies, including machine learning, and AI where applicable.
Key Job Duties
• Design forward-looking tools and workflows that drive innovation and reshape traditional geophysical methodologies
• Integrate analytical and physics-based approaches with modern AI and data science techniques to unlock new possibilities in seismic imaging
• Evaluate new ideas using synthetic and field datasets to assess performance and practical value
• Support the transition of promising solutions from discovery to commercialization
• Document research outcomes through technical reports and presentations for internal and external knowledge sharing
Key Compentencies
• Solid foundation in seismic imaging/inversion concepts and ability to connect theory to practical workflows
• Strong analytical skills and numerical background for solving seismic inverse problems
• Ability to prototype and evaluate ML/AI ideas as complements to physics-based methods
• Research-minded and proactive, staying current with state-of-the-art methods and technologies.
Qualifcations
Education
• Currently pursuing a Master’s or Ph.D. in Geophysics, Earth Sciences, Applied Physics, Applied Mathematics, Computational Science, or a related field
Required Skills & Experience
• Familiarity with seismic data processing techniques, inversion methods, or imaging algorithms
• Proficiency in Python, MATLAB, or C/C++ for scientific computing
• Experience with numerical methods and optimization theory
• Exposure to machine learning applications in seismic imaging and inversion
• Comfortable working in Linux/Unix environment
