For Students in ALA-Accredited MLIS Programs
Are you passionate about public libraries and looking to gain real-world experience to complement your MLIS studies? The Shrewsbury Public Library is offering a 3-month internship for graduate students enrolled in accredited Library and Information Science (MLIS) programs. This is a fantastic opportunity to explore multiple facets of public librarianship in a supportive and collaborative setting.
About The Internship
• Duration: 3 months
• Hours: Approximately 8 hours/week (100 total hours)
• Location: Shrewsbury Public Library
• Compensation: Unpaid, for college credit (check with your academic institution)
What You’ll Experience
Gain firsthand exposure across core public library divisions:
• Adult Services – Readers’ advisory, book clubs, event planning
• Youth Services – Programming and material preparation for children and teens
• Technical Services – Cataloging, processing, and managing library materials
• Reference & Technology – Assisting with tech help, reference questions, and digital services
Hands-On Projects May Include
• Assisting with MakerSpace and technology programming
• Creating themed bibliographies (e.g., local food, gardening, healthy cooking)
• Supporting book club groups
• Preparing materials for crafts and family programs
• Compiling collection development reports and weeding support
• Designing promotional materials using Canva, Google Suite, and Microsoft Office
Who You Are
• Enrolled in an ALA-accredited MLIS program
• Able to commit to 8 hours per week for 3 months
• Comfortable with tools like Google Suite, Microsoft Office, and Canva
• Organized, creative, detail-oriented, and enthusiastic about public service
• Interested in learning across a wide range of library functions
