Job Description

The Office of Economic Assistance (OEA) within the Nebraska Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS) is seeking an intern to support the Summer Electronic Benefit Transfer (SEBT) Program during the Spring and Summer 2026 term.

The SEBT program provides summer food benefits to eligible families. Eligibility is determined by the Nebraska Department of Education, while DHHS is responsible for issuing benefits to EBT cards and managing the related financial and administrative responsibilities. This internship offers hands-on experience supporting a large-scale public assistance program that directly impacts Nebraska families.

Internship Focus

This role is primarily administrative and customer-focused, with exposure to state systems, data monitoring, financial reconciliation, and federal reporting. The intern will support both preparatory work prior to benefit issuance (beginning around April) and the higher-volume activities that occur following benefit distribution.

Application Review: March 1st, 2026

Application Deadline: March 27th, 2026

Key Responsibilities

• Respond to customer inquiries and resolve concerns related to SEBT benefits (primarily written communication; some phone contact)
• Monitor EBT card mailings, returns, and re-mail processes
• Verify and update customer addresses and contact information
• Order replacement EBT cards through the EBT vendor system
• Assist with preparation and coordination of mass mailings (e.g., benefit expiration notices)
• Support reconciliation of SEBT benefit issuances and expenditures
• Assist with compiling and entering data for required federal financial reports
• Perform data entry, tracking, and monitoring activities to support program operations

Requirements / Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications: Currently enrolled in an undergraduate or graduate degree program at an accredited college or university (two-to-four-year institution) OR recently graduated (within one year) from an undergraduate or graduate degree program at an accredited college or university (two-to-four-year institution).

• Ability to manage confidential information appropriately
• Basic proficiency with Microsoft Office or similar systems
• Ability to work independently and as part of a team
• Professionalism and strong organizational skills
