EDUCATION INTERN (SUMMER SEASON)

REPORTS TO: Education Programs Manager
SEASONAL/NON-SEASONAL: Seasonal, non-benefited, and unpaid
POSITION SUMMARY: Assist the zoo in accomplishing its mission while teaching a variety of Education programs as you work on a project throughout the summer. The Education Internship is an unpaid position that offers college credit based on your college or institution’s requirements.
POSITION REQUIREMENTS:
• Current college student majoring in biology, zoology, education, or a related field.
• Proof of negative TB test within two years and proof of TDAP vaccine within ten years.
• Excellent interpersonal and communication skills.
• Previous teaching experience a plus.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
• Assisting with teaching Education programs including overnights, camps, informal interpretation, on-grounds and outreach programs, etc.
• Working on a project assignment of your choosing from a selection offered and overseen by Education Programs Manager.
• Ability to work independently with minimal supervision.
• Working with staff, volunteers, and other interns as needed.
• Communicating using hand held radios.
• Relating positively with diverse groups of people (guests, staff, and volunteers).
OTHER DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
• Teaching a variety of Education programs as needed.
• Aiding Education staff in organizing and streamlining existing and future programs and documents.
• Complying with all Binder Park Zoo policies and procedures.
• Participating in team-oriented zoo projects as needed.
SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES: N/A
PHYSICAL AND ENVIRONMENTAL DEMANDS:
• Ability to work a flexible schedule including weekends and holidays.
• Ability to read, speak, and write English in order to fulfill job functions in an understandable way.
• Ability to sit, stand, bend, lift and move intermittently.
• Ability to lift and carry 50 pounds.
• Ability to work outdoors in all weather conditions.
• Ability to participate in Overnights, which are mostly on weekends, 4:00pm to 12:00pm the following morning. Shifts may include 18-20 hours with short periods of sleep on a hard surface.
