The Utah Department of Natural Resources, Public Lands Policy Coordinating Office (PLPCO), has 2 seasonal positions available (no benefits). These appointments will last from approximately May - October 2026, or as the incumbents are available. Housing is not provided.
Job Duties
Are you looking to bridge the gap between classroom GIS theory and rugged, real-world application? The Utah Public Lands Policy Coordinating Office (PLPCO) is seeking two motivated interns for an immersive field data collection season.
This is an entry-level opportunity designed for individuals who want to master ESRI’s mobile suite and ArcGIS Pro while exploring Utah’s most remote landscapes. You will play a critical role in the R.S. 2477 Right-of-Way litigation and updating AccessMap 360 by "ground-truthing" remote sensing data, ensuring that Utah’s public land records are accurate and defensible.
Data collection will consist of driving 4x4 roads in Utah. Conditions of the roads vary from paved to highly technical routes (and everything in between), so strong off-road driving skills are required. This position also requires the incumbent to accurately and consistently record GPS tracks. Training on the proper workflow will be provided and must be followed.
Qualifications

The successful applicant will have the following skills and characteristics:
We are looking for candidates who are self-reliant, tech-savvy, and eager to learn.
• GIS Foundations: Basic familiarity with ArcGIS Pro and an understanding of how ArcGIS Field Maps functions.
• Field Readiness: Comfortable with a rigorous travel schedule (up to 5 days/week) involving camping in remote areas. Dispersed camping will be required. The incumbent will need to provide their own camping equipment and food when camping.
• 4x4 Driving Skills: Familiar and comfortable driving 4WD vehicles on challenging and technical terrain without damaging the vehicle or equipment.
• Technical Proficiency: Ability to troubleshoot mobile devices in areas with no cellular service.
• Physical Stamina: Ability to sit in a vehicle on rough terrain for up to 10 hours/day and lift/carry equipment up to 50 lbs.
• Teamwork: A positive attitude and strong communication skills are essential for spending long days in the field with a partner.
Preferred:
• A strong desire to support and learn about Utah’s Public Land Priorities.
• Extensive experience driving 4WD vehicles on rough terrain across Utah’s desert
• First Aid/CPR/AED certified
• Familiarity with Leave No Trace and Tread Lightly! principles
• Ability to successfully troubleshoot technological issues
• This position is not a good fit for anyone trying to juggle multiple jobs and preference will be given to applicants that are dedicated to this position only.
Other
This isn't your average internship. You will spend your summer exploring the "hidden" Utah—places few people ever see.
The incumbent must be responsible, respectful, and have a clean driving record. Long days will be spent in the vehicle with a colleague, so the ability to get along with others, communicate, and quickly resolve conflict is essential. Although possible, we rarely send drivers out alone to collect road data.
• Equipment Provided: State vehicles and technical gear are provided.
• Reimbursement: Travel costs (food and lodging/per diem) are reimbursed.
• Career Building: You will finish the season with a portfolio of field experience that is highly sought after.
Note: Incumbents must provide their own personal camping gear (tent, sleeping bag, food).
