Internship Description

Position Overview:
Quality Steel and Plastics is seeking a motivated Mechanical Engineering Intern to support continuous improvement efforts on the production floor. This role is hands-on and focused on analyzing manufacturing processes, identifying inefficiencies, and developing practical solutions including tooling, automation, and process optimization.


Key Responsibilities:
• Observe and study shop floor operations including machining, welding, and assembly processes
• Identify opportunities to improve efficiency, reduce waste, and streamline production workflows
• Assist in the design and implementation of jigs, fixtures, and tooling to support manufacturing
• Evaluate opportunities for automation or semi-automation in production processes
• Collaborate with engineers, machinists, and welders to troubleshoot production challenges
• Create and update CAD models, drawings, and documentation as needed (SolidWorks or similar)
• Support time studies, process mapping, and root cause analysis initiatives
• Assist with prototyping and testing of new concepts or process improvements


Qualifications:
• Currently enrolled in a Bachelor’s degree program in Mechanical Engineering or a related engineering discipline
• Basic understanding of manufacturing processes such as machining, welding, or fabrication
• Experience with CAD software (SolidWorks preferred)
• Strong problem-solving skills and attention to detail
• Ability to work both independently and collaboratively in a hands-on shop environment
• Strong communication skills and willingness to engage with production personnel


Preferred Qualifications:
• Prior internship or hands-on shop experience
• Familiarity with lean manufacturing or continuous improvement principles
• Experience with basic measurement tools (calipers, micrometers, etc.)
