Florina Pinzaru


 

Biography

Visiting Professor at the College of Business of TAMUSA, Florina Pinzaru, Ph.D, is the Dean of the School of Management of the National University of Political Studies and Public Administration (SNSPA), Bucharest, Romania, where she teaches General Management, Fundamentals of Marketing, and Strategic Management.

SNSPA is the most prestigious public university in Social Sciences in Romania, part of CIVICA - The European University of Social Sciences along with Bocconi University (Italy), Central European University (Hungary - Austria), the European University Institute (Intergovernmental, Italy), the Hertie School (Germany), IE University (Spain), Sciences Po (France), SGH Warsaw School of Economics (Poland), the Stockholm School of Economics (Sweden) and The London School of Economics and Political Science (United Kingdom).

Professor Florina Pinzaru holds a Ph.D. in Economics and International Business from the Bucharest Business University (2007), a MA in Strategic Marketing (2007), and a BA in Economics and International Business (2003) from the same university, a BA in Communication and Public Relations from SNSPA (2002) and is habilitated to coordinate PhD thesis in management (2018). She was a Visiting Student at Sciences-Po Paris (2001-2002) and a Visiting Professor at the Lomonosov University, Moscow, Russia (2017), at the University of Siedlce, Poland (2016), at the VIVES University, Kortrijk, Belgium (2015) and the Université 2 Lumière, Lyon, France (2012). Florina Pinzaru has been an Associated Professor of ISIT Paris Panthéon – Assas Université since 2019, where she teaches Economics, Management and Marketing.

With an extensive experience in the corporate world, where she was Marketing Communications Manager for ENGIE Romania (former Gaz de France – Suez Romania), and more than ten years of experience as a consultant and trainer in Marketing for enterprises in the production of disinfectants and toiletries, furniture, and utilities, Professor Florina Pinzaru harmonizes in her projects the academic perspective with the practical insights. As a researcher, Florina Pinzaru managed the Center for Research in Management of Leadership of SNSPA (2013-2017) and has been involved in various research projects. She has published Web of Science and Scopus-indexed papers,  books, and chapters in Romania and abroad.

Syllabus

Catalog Course Description: MGMT 3311.911 Principles of Management CRN 12945

Introduction to the management of business organizations. The functions of management and role of the manager. Managerial decision-making, communication, social responsibility and business ethics. How organizational power and politics affect the manager. Prerequisites: ENGL 1301 and ENGL 1302.

Course Objectives:  This course will introduce students to the concept of organizational management. Among the major topics in this class, we will discuss the history and evolution of management, the four functions of management, various managerial activities, top management team decision-making and strategy making, corporate social responsibility, ethics, globalization, diversity, teams, and human resource management.  

Prerequisites: ENGL 1301 and ENGL 1302. Students who do not meet the pre-requisites must contact the instructor immediately.

Student Learning Outcomes:   

After successful completion of this course, students will be able to:

  1. Detail the evolution of management thought.
  2. Describe the managerial roles including planning, organizing, leading, and controlling.
  3. Explain the role of strategic management development.
  4. Explain the decision-making process.
  5. Explain the concepts of corporate social responsibility (CSR) and managerial, organizational, and individual ethics.
  6. Explain the effect of globalization on managers and organizations.
  7. Discuss leadership, motivation, and team theories.
  8. Discuss the role of human resources on value creation.
Required Materials:
1. Textbook:  Management-A Practical Approach, 10e, by Kinicki,  ISBN: 9780134239828.
2. Blackboard: Connect to http://tamusa.blackboard.com. You will have SmartBook (readings+integrated quizzes), written assignments, PowerPoint slides, and other supplementary materials in Connect. Check announcements, emails, and class communications through Blackboard and Connect daily.

Time Expectations for coursework: You are expected to spend 8-13 hours per week for the course. Based on the background, some students may require more time. Time spent may be longer when assignments/exams are due.

Other Recommended / Reading Materials: Additional reading materials are available on the course website as recommended by the instructor. 

Course Requirements every student must fulfill in order to succeed in the course:

  1. Students should check the Course Calendar, Announcements, and Messages (email) systems in Blackboard on a regular basis.
  2. Students should keep current with all course assignments, quizzes, and examinations.
  3. If the course uses remote proctoring for exams, students must schedule their exams early in the semester.
  4. Students should ask questions and communicate with the instructor either in class, online, offline, or during office hours.
  5. For all classwork, exams, quizzes, etc., if a student is completing it off-campus, then they are responsible for the availability of internet connectivity. Extensions will not be granted for lack of availability of internet connections.

Grading Policy:   The final course grade will be based on your performance on the quizzes, exams, assignments and class participation using the following weights:           

  1. Homework Assignments in Connect (6-8 per chapter) 50%
  2. Online exams (3)                                                           30%
  3. Final Oral Exam scheduled in class for 10/14/2024    20%                                      

The final letter grades will be assigned as follows: Above 90% Þ A; 80 – 89% Þ B; 70 – 79% Þ C; 60 – 69% Þ D; Below 60% Þ F.

Online exams. There will be three exams. The exams will consist of 40 multiple-choice questions. You will have 50 minutes to answer each exam. The exams will be administered online.

Final Oral Exam. It will take place during the class meeting on October 14th. It will consist of an oral presentation made in teams of 3 students on how organizations can grow leaders from managers. The presentation must have both theoretical and practical information, with proper references. Relevant statistics and examples are recommended. The usage of PowerPoint / Prezi / Canva support is mandatory. Every team will have a time slot of 10 minutes to present, followed by a short Q&A session.

Online Homework:  Each week, you will have a variety of homework assignments that highlight various topics and learning styles in each chapter. You will have seven days to cover these assignments. At the end of each week, these assignments will be closed, and another set of homework assignments will be opened.

 Make-up and Late Assignment/exam/quiz policy:

As a general rule, make-ups or late submissions will NOT be offered or accepted for any missed assignments/exams/quizzes. Late submissions or make-ups may be accepted/administered only in extraordinary circumstances such as an excused official university activity, a severe illness, or a dire emergency. However, you must provide documentation either before or within a few days of the missed assignment/quiz/exam.
