Biography

Joe A. Montalvo’s journey through education is a testament to his unwavering commitment
to the Edgewood community, where he has been a dedicated member since childhood. A
proud graduate of Edgewood High School, Class of 1982, he embarked on a career that
would span over three decades, deeply impacting the lives of countless students.

In 1993, he began his professional journey at Edgewood Independent School District (EISD)
as a Special Education paraprofessional at Emma Frey Elementary and Wrenn Jr. High
School. His passion for education led him to pursue higher learning, culminating in a
bachelor’s degree in special education from Our Lady of the Lake University in 2001. His
early career included teaching at Gus Garcia Middle School, where he served as a Special
Education Reading Resource and Inclusion teacher and made significant contributions as
a member of the Campus-Based Planning and Oversight Committee (CPOC).

In 2004, he took on the role of Lead Special Education Teacher at John F. Kennedy High
School. His commitment to professional development was evident as he earned a
master’s degree in Autism and Emotional Disturbances from Our Lady of the Lake
University the same year. By 2007, he transitioned to the position of Special Education
Transition and Graduation Specialist within the district, where he leveraged his expertise to
support students’ pathways to success. His dedication to empowering educators is
highlighted by his completion of training in Nonviolent Crisis Intervention (CPI), where he
became a certified trainer, providing essential training to teachers and district staff. His
educational journey continued as he pursued a Master of Arts Degree in Educational
Administration Specialization from Concordia University, which he completed in 2016.

After 31 years of dedicated service, He retired on June 30, 2024, from EISD, where he had
been serving as a Special Education Instructional Coordinator. His work involved
collaboration with district leadership, staff and parents to create innovative learning
initiatives and resources, reflecting his belief in the potential of every student to achieve
their lifelong goals. In August 2024, He embraced a new challenge as the Project SEARCH
Instructor at Texas A&M San Antonio Institute for School and Community Partnership. In
this role, he continues to champion the cause of education and community engagement,
ensuring that students with disabilities are equipped with the skills and opportunities they
need to thrive. Through his relentless passion and dedication, he is committed to fostering
an inclusive and empowering environment for all students.
