Dr. Mary Dixon Bethel is a Lecturer of Literacy at Texas A&M University–San Antonio, where she teaches undergraduate literacy courses focused on preparing preservice teachers to support literacy development in elementary and secondary classrooms. Her teaching includes EDRG 3331, EDRG 4349, EDRG 4389, and EDRG 4351.

Dr. Bethel holds a Ph.D. in Culture, Literacy, and Language from the University of Texas at San Antonio, as well as M.Ed. degrees in Education Administration and Teacher Leadership from Lamar University. She earned a B.A. in English Literature from the University of Houston and holds EC–12 Principal Certification along with English 8–12 and ESL Supplemental teaching certifications.

Prior to joining Texas A&M University–San Antonio, Dr. Bethel served in a variety of instructional leadership and literacy-focused roles across Texas public schools. Her experience includes serving as an Academic Dean/Assistant Principal, District Instructional Coach, Director of Literacy, Assistant Principal, Instructional Coach, Principal Intern, Testing and Data Coordinator, and English Teacher/Interventionist. Her leadership experience includes curriculum development, literacy implementation, instructional coaching, professional development, data-driven instruction, intervention planning, and support for teachers and school leaders.

Dr. Bethels professional work centers on literacy instruction, teacher development, adolescent literacy, instructional leadership, and the design and implementation of effective literacy practices. Her experience includes leading PK–12 literacy initiatives, implementing Reader/Writer Workshop practices, supporting Read 180 and other literacy interventions, and developing professional learning aligned with instructional priorities.

Dr. Bethel is also an active presenter and professional educator. Her presentations include work with the Southwest Education Research Association, American Educational Research Association, UTSA Roadrunner Experience, Texas ASCD, Tex TESOL, the TEKS Resource Conference and Writing Across the Curriculum.
