Dr. Brown James is a visiting assistant professor of communication at Texas A&M University-San Antonio. Using primarily qualitative methods, his research focuses on the intersection of U.S. news media and the federal judiciary with an emphasis on institutional legitimacy, public understanding of the law, and news rhetoric and discourse.

Before becoming a professor, Brown served as a court coordinator for the Piedmont Judicial Circuit in Georgia and afterwards was a deputy executive director for an education based non-profit organization. Brown has also served 11 years in the United States Coast Guard Reserves where he is a tactical coxswain (gunboat captain) for an expeditionary waterside unit. He has served on several overseas deployments and in many states across the southern U.S.
