Hi, I am Dr. Denetria Brooks-James. I am a mother, grandmother, educator, Licensed Clinical Social Worker-Supervisor, clinician, author, and professional speaker with more than 22 years of academic experience in higher education. I earned earned my Bachelor of Social Work and Master of Social Work degrees from East Tennessee State University and my Doctor of Social Work degree from the University of St. Thomas in Minneapolis, Minnesota.

Throughout my academic career, I have been committed to preparing students for ethical, culturally responsive, and compassionate practice in social work, behavioral health, and human services. Her teaching and scholarly interests include behavioral health, cultural humility, social justice, trauma-informed and healing-centered practice, clinical supervision, co-occurring disorders, human development, and creating psychologically safe and inclusive environments.

In addition to my academic work, I maintain an active clinical practice and provides professional supervision to emerging social workers. I currently serve as the Chair of the NASW-Texas Alamo Branch and is a member of the NASW Texas Ethics Committee.

I am passionate about bridging education and clinical practice while empowering students and professionals to lead with purpose, competence, compassion, and cultural humility. My work reflects a longstanding commitment to education, advocacy, professional development, and strengthening the communities she serves.
