Dr. Young Rae Kim is an associate professor in mathematics education at Texas A&M University-San Antonio, currently teaching undergraduate math methods courses. Prior to coming to TAMU-SA, Dr. Kim was a postdoctoral research associate in the STEM Education Center at the University of Minnesota, where he completed his Ph.D. degree in mathematics education with a minor in statistics education. He has teaching experience in diverse contexts with a variety of learners for over 23 years, including teaching elementary-, secondary-, and college-level mathematics, teaching undergraduate math methods courses, and supporting practicing math and science teachers through professional development. Dr. Kim’s research focuses on students’ development of mathematical and statistical thinking, in particular, their conceptual understanding of mathematical structures and metacognitive abilities. His focus centers on developing curricula by structures-centered approaches that effectively foster students’ development of mathematical and statistical thinking, with an emphasis on multiple representations, modeling, and problem solving through STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) integration and collaborative learning. Storytelling and Model-Eliciting Activities (MEAs) are central to his recent research. His recent research has been published in the Journal of Mathematical Behavior and the Journal of Engineering Education.
