Martha Saywell

Dr. Martha Saywell joined the faculty of Texas A&M University-San Antonio in 2016 where she oversees the music curriculum for the Creative Arts and Performance Studies program.  She also served as the music curriculum architect for College Credit for Heroes, a specialized online degree program created in partnership between A&M-SA and the Texas Workforce Commission to provide a more accessible and streamlined pathway to college graduation for American military veterans.  She directs the University Voices choral ensemble, serves as faculty liaison and host to the San Antonio Community Wind Ensemble, and represents the Department of Language, Literature and Arts on the Faculty Senate. Previously she has served on the faculty at University of Texas-Pan American, Angelo State University, Texas A&M International University, and Laredo Community College.

In demand as a collaborative pianist, Dr. Saywell has been seen on stages in Germany, Austria, Hungary, the Czech Republic, and frequently across the United States.  As a strong advocate for music by women composers, she has been a regular performer at the annual Music by Women Festival at Mississippi University for Women since its inception in 2017.  Most recently she completed recordings for a new CD with Dr. Scott Roeder of University of Texas-Rio Grande Valley under the Mark Records label, scheduled to be released in 2024. Their previous CD, also under the Mark Records label, was included on the Grammy Entry List in 2020 and won two Global Music Awards.

Dr. Saywell holds a Bachelor of Arts in Keyboard Studies degree (piano, organ, and harpsichord) from Murray State University (KY), both Master of Music and Doctor of Musical Arts degrees with a specialization in collaborative piano from the University of Wisconsin-Madison and an Effective Teaching Practices certificate from the Association of College and University Educators. She is a member of the International Alliance for Women in Music, College Music Society (South Central Regional Conference secretary/treasurer) and American Association of University Professors (local A&M-SA chapter vice president).
