Alba Chavez, Ph.D: Assistant Professor of Microbiology at Texas A&M University–San Antonio. My research interests focus on microbial ecology, biofilms, microbial interactions with their environments, and the adaptation of microorganisms to challenging environments.

Dr. Chavez’s work explores the diverse ways microorganisms interact with one another and with their physical surroundings, with applications spanning environmental microbiology, microbial biotechnology, and astrobiology. Her interests include the study of microbial communities in extreme and simulated extraterrestrial environments and the potential roles of microorganisms in planetary exploration.

As an educator, Dr. Chavez is committed to engaging students in authentic scientific inquiry and connecting foundational concepts in microbiology to contemporary research questions. She incorporates hands-on laboratory experiences, interdisciplinary topics, and current discoveries into her courses to encourage scientific curiosity and critical thinking. She is particularly passionate about mentoring undergraduate students and creating opportunities for them to participate in research.
