Nicole Carr

Dr. Carr is currently at work on her first book, Black Feminist Mothering in 21st Century Literature: I Am Not Your Mammy. The book explores Black women’s strategies for resisting reproductive and intraracial injustices. The phrase I Am Not Your Mammy emerges as a praxis of self-preservation safeguarding Black women’s emotional and maternal labors from white supremacist and intraracial claims. Black Feminist Mothering in 21st Century Literature will be published by Routledge in 2024.

In October 2023, Dr. Carr will release “High Risk: Black Mothers Protecting Themselves and Their Babies.” The documentary film, centering Black caregivers, mothers, and healthcare providers, examines the resistance strategies Black women develop in the wake of obstetric violence.
