Helen White

Biography

My name is Helen White, and I am thrilled to be part of the College of Education at Texas A&M, San Antonio! I have worked as a classroom teacher, a Reading Recovery teacher, a dyslexia interventionist, and a literacy coach for over 20 years in the Houston and San Antonio areas. In addition to my adjunct position at TAMUSA, I am in my 4th year as a cohort leader for the Texas Reading Acadamies. I love working with teachers, and aspiring teachers, helping them understand literacy development and how to best help all students learn to read and write.

I earned advanced degrees in both curriculum and instruction and social work from the University of Houston. My passion for chidren and families and literacy learning has guided my work, particularly with students from low-income communities. I believe that with deep content knowledge and effective instruction, teachers can deliver the stong foundational literacy instruction that is essential for ensuring all students succeed.

My husband Nick and I have four crazy, wonderful children... a 24 year old daughter, 23 year old boy/girl twins, and a 19 year old daughter who just started college...in Michigan!  In addition to being a huge literacy nerd, I love re-purposing old furniture, antiquing in Round Top, hanging out with my dog at the Pearl farmers market, listening to live music in the hill country, and anything having to do with Broadway musicals!
