My name is Helen White, and I am thrilled to be an adjunct professor in the Department of Education and Human Development at Texas A&M San Antonio. With over 25 years of experience in literacy education, I have had the privilege of serving as a classroom teacher, Title 1 support teacher, Reading Recovery teacher, dyslexia interventionist, literacy coach, and a teacher trainer in several large school districts in both Houston and San Antonio. I currently facilitate the Texas Reading Academies in Northside ISD, providing professional development for educators in the Science of Teaching Reading.

I earned advanced degrees in Curriculum and Instruction and Social Work from the University of Houston. My passion for children, families, and literacy learning has guided my work, especially with students from low-income communities. I am deeply committed to supporting equitable educational opportunities and fostering a love of reading in every student and teacher I meet.

Outside of work, I enjoy a lively family life with my husband Nick and our four crazy, wonderful children. In my free time, you’ll find me re-purposing old furniture, antiquing in Round Top, hanging out at the Pearl farmer’s market, listening to live music in the hill country, participating in improv classes and storytelling events, and enjoying anything related to Broadway musicals. I’m also a proud literacy nerd!

I look forward to learning and growing together this year!
